Skin Cancer
Finding out you have skin cancer is scary. We understand, and we can help.
Ottawa Skin Cancer Clinic
At HY Cosmetics & Minor Surgery, we’ve spent over a decade helping Ottawa families through exactly this moment. You’re not just a case number to us. You’re someone who deserves answers, skilled care, and yes, to still look like yourself when this is over.
Our clinic is led by a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon and an experienced general surgeon. That means you get two things most clinics can’t offer at once: complete cancer removal AND results you’ll actually feel good about.
Everything happens right here: consultation, biopsy, surgery, reconstruction with local anesthesia in our fully accredited facility. No hospital. No general anesthesia. No long waits.
Skin Cancer Surgery in Ottawa: What We Actually Do
At HY Cosmetics & Minor Surgery, we offer a full range of proven surgical treatments for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and early melanoma. While we do not perform Mohs surgery on-site, our dual plastic and general surgery expertise allows us to treat lesions on all parts of the body. We use specialized plastic surgery techniques for the best cosmetic outcome and healing. We can handle the large majority of basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and early melanomas with excellent health and cosmetic outcomes.
The procedures we perform most often:
- Wide Local Excision – We remove the cancer completely with guideline-based margins for high cure rates.
- Elliptical Excision & Layered Closure – Clean, linear scars that heal beautifully, especially important on your face, neck, and arms.
- Flap Reconstruction – For larger areas, our surgeons rearrange nearby tissue to close the wound naturally. You’d be surprised how well these heal.
- Full-Thickness Skin Grafts – Sometimes necessary for the ears, nose, or scalp. We’re meticulous about color and texture matching.
- Curettage & Electrodessication – Quick and effective for low-risk superficial cancers.
- Cryosurgery – Targeted freezing for select early lesions.
Every single case is planned and carried out by surgeons who understand both sides: getting the cancer out completely and making sure you’re happy with how you look afterward. That’s not an afterthought for us – it’s the whole point.
Patients come to us from Kanata, Orleans, Barrhaven, Nepean, Gloucester, and Gatineau because they want both. The cancer is gone, and their confidence is intact.
Why Choose HY Surgery for Skin Cancer Care?
Real surgical expertise. Every reconstruction is handled by board-certified plastic and general surgeons. Not nurses. Not physician assistants. Not residents (trainee physicians).
We Think About Your Scars
Incisions go in natural skin creases and tension lines. It sounds like a small thing until you’re looking in the mirror six months later.

We’ve Been Doing This For A Long Time
Over a decade serving Ottawa families. We know what we’re doing.
What to Expect During Skin Cancer Surgery
We know the unknown is stressful. So here’s exactly what to expect:
Your First Visit (15–30 minutes)
Your surgeon examines the lesion, goes over any biopsy results you may already have, and explains what needs to happen next. If you want, we can often remove the cancerous tissue that same day (a “See-and-Do”). Or we’ll schedule it for another time if you’d prefer to prepare.
Surgery Day
Here’s how it goes:
- Local anesthetic numbs the area completely.
- You’re awake the whole time, but you won’t feel a thing.
- The cancer comes out with appropriate margins.
- If you need reconstruction (a flap or graft), that happens immediately. You leave with everything closed.
Total time in clinic: usually 30–45 minutes.
Recovery
You’ll get detailed aftercare instructions, and you can reach your surgeon if something feels off or you just have questions. We don’t disappear after the procedure.
Follow-Up & Skin Checks
More Than Just Removing a Tumor
We understand what’s really going on when someone walks through our door. It’s not just about the surgery, but rather about the fear of what this means, whether you’ll have an obvious scar, or whether this is going to turn into something bigger.
Our patients repeatedly tell us the same thing: they feel relieved knowing that cancer clearance and how they’ll look were treated as equally important. Because they are.
Whether your family doctor referred you, your dermatologist sent you our way, or you noticed a changing mole and decided to get it checked, you’ll be treated with urgency, skill, and genuine care.

FAQs
What types of skin cancer surgery do you do without Mohs?
Is this safe? Will I be awake?
Yes, to both. Everything’s done under local anesthesia in our accredited clinic. You won’t feel any pain, you stay awake, and you go home the same day.
How long does the surgery take?
Most procedures run 30–45 minutes start to finish, including reconstruction if you need it.
Who actually does the surgery?
A fellowship-trained plastic surgeon or an experienced general surgeon. They personally handle every case. You’re not handed off to anyone else.
Is this covered by OHIP?
100%. Medically necessary skin cancer removal and reconstruction are fully covered.
How fast can I get in?
New patients are typically seen within a week. If your lesion is changing or looks concerning, we’ll get you in faster, sometimes within days.
Will I have a visible scar?
Our plastic surgeon places incisions in natural skin creases and uses layered closure techniques. Scars heal thin and fade over time. Most patients are surprised by how subtle they are.
Can you do the reconstruction the same day?
Yes, flaps and grafts are done immediately after removal. You leave with the wound completely closed.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your surgeon examines the spot, reviews any biopsy results (or does one right then), and we book surgery. If you prefer, many patients opt for “see-and-do” where we remove it that same day.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
Not necessarily. You’ll only have local anesthetic, so you can drive yourself. Many people appreciate having someone with them in case you need extra sedating medications.
How much time off work will I need?
For face procedures: 1–3 days. For body or limbs: 0–2 days. Stitches come out between 7–21 days, depending on the location.
When do I get my pathology results?
Final margin results are ready within the month. We will call you personally – you won’t be chasing down results.
